A top Penang DAP leader has requested ally PKR to sacrifice several seats to make way for Malay candidates from DAP in the general election.
So what people says?
MatrixLYN I feel that he does have some point. Most of us the internet generation has gone beyond race, but frankly, we are not the majority yet…there are still many people out on the street which goes by race. I have no problem supporting malays in PAS or PKR either, but it’ll be good for DAP to have some Malays candidate, as it’ll give UMNO less bullet to tembak.
Simon Lee 3ed5 Why are you talking to the press? Is there always a need to give a press release revealing all your strategy to all & sundry? When Umno & MSM just wating to pounce on every opportunity to spin against you, such statement is politically immature & unwise when you should be discussing such strategy privately with your partners for a win win situation & not opening yourself to your enemies to attack you at every turn! The good rakyat are quite tired, to say the least, of the many chest thumbing by the DAP, PAS & PR leaders blowing their trumpet declaring, threatening & challenging (like school kids) to capture this & capture that & laying all their cards down where every politician is playing to the gallery & trying to score brownie points. It’s going to be “open season” soon & the political toads in the PR party will transform into political frogs when the situation is right for harvest by Umno! Be forewarned & come the next election, we’ll see the usual shameless sins of betrayal!
prussiablue Leaders should not go around demanding ally to cede seats to them in public. This may be portrayed by the public as lust for power. This Zul here only demand PKR to give seats but never once mention, which seat DAP is going to give to PKR, so I suppose this is a one-way demand. Is this the best way for PR? I agree the main consideration should be candidate qualification. This news will only be gobbled up by Utusan & TV3 to show the arrogance of DAP. For this, I think this guy is not a suitable candidate.
hmmmm I’m all for a good mix of candidates of all races in all parties, not only DAP. If DAP wants to field Malay candidates in the next GE, why don’t they eye the seats that UMNO won instead of PKR’s? If PKR or even PAS don’t have strong candidates to take on UMNO, then by all means DAP shd help.
ANONIMOUS Z It is only logical for a component party of a coalition to surrender its previously allotted seats, which were lost or won but the candidates defected later, to its ally. This will ensure the respective component parties to treasure and to double ensure to fill in the best candidates that can win. There is no point of filling lousy candidates that cannot be acceptable by the voters. Remember, Anwar Ibrahim used to plea with the voters that, BN is filthy rich; they can afford to fool the people by throwing in a lot of money to support very lousy and sub-standard candidates. But PKR is a very poor party depending on voluntary contribution and donation from the people for survival. As such, PKR promises to give to the people, the best and highest qualified candidates. These lost seats in Penang showed that PKR did not fill in the best as promised, as such, it is very logical for PKR to surrender them to its ally in coming GE13.
AnakMalaysia It sounds quite logical, but should also be reciprocated. Seat allocation is always the problem for both groups, BN and PR. It is wise to settle it amicably, with lots of compromise, sensible choice of winnable, likeable candidates and fair to both the party, the group and the rakyat. There is no right or wrong here, its the wisdom and the cohesiveness among the component parties that count. Let it be a winning and winnable allocations, as the winner must be both the PR and the rakyat.
NX No matter how much malaysians crow about being malaysian, race does matter for now. DAP should reinvent itself from the current perceived cinaman party to a true multiracial party that is seen and felt and not just spoken of. One day if PAS and PKR chose to end the alliance, you can go alone all the way to represent all malaysians.
Boiling Mud Can we work together for once without enslaved by the fixation on race and religion? We are working towards a fair and just Malaysia for our children and theirs to come in years, just so they can be proud of being Malaysians. If Pakatan government has been doing a good job, does it really matter it is Malay, Chinese, or Indian? Let’s work by consensus across the racial and religion divide that has been slowly destroying our country all these years. EN. ZULKIFLI, when you proposed to ask for more Malay seats, is the intention for the good of the people or is it for the selfish purposes of archaic politicians’?
JusticeKini While Zulkifli’s argument seems logical from DAP’s viewpoint, is DAP prepared to surrrender the Chinese majority seats to PKR or even PAS? Not only in Penang but also nationwide esp Perak and Selangor. Most important is quality of candidate and not KULIT-fication. China’s Deng Xiao Ping said before, “whether it is white cat or black cat, it does not matter as long it can catch the mouse”. Time for DAP to think out of racial lines and put real meaning to its slogan of CAT- Competency Accountability and Transparency”. DAP also has its fair share of non-performing Aduns and MPs in Penang n Selangor too. So please STOP pointing fingers but come out with a comprehensive plan to select the best candidate for the job unaminously agreed by ALL parties in PR. After 308 GE12, more Malays are joining DAP and some joined for selfish materialistic UMNO-style agenda. Let’s vote for a 2-party system but PR must put in credible candidates.
Voice What is Zulkifli request is only a request and should not be blown out of proportion. There is no force and no ultimatum been given. He is doing his part as a leader and from his point of view. However, i opined that there are much better ways to address all this issue. Instead of see it from race point of view which is what we should discard, the leaders in Pakatan should have in the spirit of co-operation, multi-racial and harmony which must be too way and not one way, to discuss the exchanging of seats without mentioning of who or what race to be fielded. Just strictly on exhanges of seats and once exchanges, it is up to the Party to field whom they like to field. Cheers.
Onyourtoes Zulkifli, Please don’t use race for your own personal ambition. What is this Malay and Chinese votes for DAP? You seem unable to disentangle from race in what you think and do. PR and DAP should be supported or not supported based on policies and performance, period. This country only has future if enough people are convinced that it is “the content of our character and not the colour of our skin” that shall determine who should be given the opportunity to govern. Please help to realise this goal, not to accentuate the opposite.
Malaysianearthquake good fight..cosmetic politics by dap..last election rakyat malaysia punished bn racial parties..but now dap playing racial politics in difrent manner… its clear that dap try to weekend pakatan rakyat. why not dap put this malay candidates in their own chinese majority seats. UMNO in dap, MIC in dap and MCA in dap..rakyat must reject dap racial politics…How can rakyat trust this dap in pr…if they playing racial politics for their own party not thingking for larger context to capture putrajaya? therefore bn confident that they can maintain power..
Anonymous There is some truth in Zul’s request. PR parties are mature enough to accommodate many views. Each of them is no longer defensive and over sensitive to other’s remarks and requests. We wish them well as they discuss issues with the view to form the federal govt. I believe there won’t be any public spat over this remark by Zul. I sincerely hope that Zul had make this known to the party leadership which in turn to bring it up for discussion at PR level.
Anonymous_4031 Pakatan Rakyat leaders must present the best candidates in the election, be they Malays, Chinese, Indians, Eurasians. That is the best way forward: no dog-n-the manger attitude. Will PR leaders rise to the occasion and take the bull by the horns? Or will they sleep in the hay and refuse to allow the cows to eat the hay? PR leaders must look at the BIG picture and not immersed in their own cocoons. The world is moving forward; and leaders must also move forward. The same principle applies to BN leadership. Obsessed with personal power and personal glory, the nation cannot move forward ina globalised market. It must take the CREAM of whatever colour; it must discard sycophants and passengers who have vested interests; and not the interests of the people! Finally, it is MERITOCRACY is the way forward. A strong leader will put people first; and himself last.He will dare to pursue the highest goals for the greater good.
