Potential method for addressing the problem of disposal of organic waste is found when two lecturers in the Faculty of Engineering Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) in collaboration with Nasmech Technology Sdn. Ltd. successfully build production plant biochar from oil palm empty Bunches (EFB).

Plant drive Carbonator T is, the first of its kind in the world built by Prof. Dr. Dr. Idris and Azni. Mohamad Amran Mohd and funded by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation under grant TechnoFund worth RM3.98 million and it can produce 20 tons of biochar day.

“Production of biochar is a potential method of disposal of organic waste in the country. It is also used as fuel for renewable energy and as carbon storage in soil for mitigation of climate change,” he said. Amran Mohamad in a statement here today. — Bernama
